 German Holidays in 2024

Understanding Germany's public holidays will help you organize your activities and make the most of your time, whether you live there or are just visiting. We'll present you a list of Germany's public holidays for 2024 in this page.

These holidays play a big role in German culture and provide a chance to celebrate, unwind, and discover the numerous customs of this dynamic nation.

Now let's look at the calendar and see which holidays will influence Germany in 2024!

German holiday types

Three categories can be used to describe German holidays:

Public holidays in Germany

All 16 German federal states commemorate nine public holidays, such as German Unity Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

Regional holidays in Germany

State governments have the last say over public holidays, even if the federal government can proclaim national holidays. Because of this, some federal states celebrate holidays that are not observed by other countries. With thirteen days off a year, Bavaria is the state with the most public holidays. There are ten to twelve days in a year in the other federal states.

Other German holidays

Apart from the publicly observed public holidays, there exist other informal celebrations, including St Nicholas' Day (Nikolaus) on December 5, Rosenmontag, Carnival Monday, and Christmas Eve.

Germany's school holidays

Between five and six vacation periods are observed by German schools annually, including vacations in the fall and spring in addition to the Easter, summer, and Christmas holidays. Germany's school vacations vary by federal state.
